There were moments when navigating freshman year of college with chronic pain was more brutal than I had planned for. I wrote this poem after a string of such moments, struggling to even keep up with my writing homework because of the pain and because of speech-to-text’s lack of cooperativeness.

Lack
I need His peace to hold me
in these unquiet moments
when speech-to text-apps fail me.
I’m tired, please don’t scold me,
my dream was this enrollment,
though school is not smooth sailing
and tumult is prevailing
there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.
Remind me of all those
who never sigh nor ask me
“Why can’t you be okay?”
but love me though I show
that I have let pain drag me
inside self-pity’s cage;
and are my hands each day–
There’s no one else I’d rather know.
And so my heart He heals
through those that open doors,
who cut and serve my food,
who let me cry at meals
and ask to help me more.
Lord, grant me quietude
and rising gratitude–
There’s nothing else I’d rather feel.
