As a writer, I naturally ruminate on language.
~
language
twists on the tip of my tongue,
a never-ending torrent from the deeps of my thoughts,
a muddle of words, a mimicry of sentences heard
and transfigured by my own imagination,
echoes of every thought that ever
slipped from someone’s tongue
into the recesses of reality.
~
The words we say, the vocabulary we know, the sentence structures with which we are most comfortable, they are shaped in us by everyone to whom we have spoken, every book we’ve ever read, every advertisement that’s been flashed across our eyes, every Substack post we’ve scrolled and meme we’ve glanced at. And all those words that shape us were in turn formed by the words spoken before, down through all languages and cultures, down through the centuries to the Tower of Babel and beyond.
It is a wonder to imagine and remember the vast interconnecting web of human communication.
Thank you for reading!
